On June 11/24 , 1856, Ivan Vasilievich Kireevskii—a literary critic, philosopher, and co-founder of the Slavophile movement—passed away during a cholera epidemic. He was only fifty. Along with his brother Pyotr, who died shortly after, Kireevskii was buried at Optina Monastery—the first laymen to receive such an honor.
